Is Domestic Violence Such A Big Problem?

  • In this country a women is abused every 9 seconds.
  • A woman is more likely to be assaulted injured, raped, or killed by a male partner than by any other type of assailant.
  • Domestic violence is believed to be the most common yet under-reported crime in our nation.
  • Domestic violence is a major health problem to women.
  • The direct costs of medical treatment for battered women annually are estimated over $1.8 billion.

Why Does She Stay If The Abuse Is So Bad?

Battered women, in general, do not passively endure physical abuse, but actively seek assistance in ending the violence from a variety of sources, including police, lawyers, health care personnel, family members, and the clergy. Frequently, it is the failure of these individuals and systems to provide adequate support, which traps women in violent relationships.

There are many women who do stay and suffer in silence. We will never know the true reason a woman stays, as every woman has a different reason. There are a variety of reasons that many women have expressed for staying some are as follows:

  • A battered woman may face the most physical danger when she attempts to leave. She may be threatened with violence or death or attacked if she tries to flee. She fears for her safety, her children’s safety, and the safety of those who help her.
  • Some women do not leave for religious, cultural or socially learned beliefs; a woman may feel that it is her duty to keep the marriage together at all costs.
  • Many women want the violence, not the relationship to end. They may take steps to try to stop the abuse. Leaving the home may be their last resort.
  • Some women want to keep their family together at all costs. They may endure physical and emotional abuse so that their children have a mother and a father at home. Often times in these circumstances it is not unless the violence is directed at the children that the woman will leave the relationship. More than half of children whose mothers are battered are also victims of physical abuse.
  • A woman may be financially dependant on her husband. She will probably face severe economic hardship if she chooses to support herself and her children on her own.

For some the question of why does she stay raises another question: Why does he stay? If he is so unhappy that he would abuse her on a regular basis why doesn’t he leave? Why should she have to leave her home to be safe? Asking the question of why does she stay or why doesn’t she leave, places all of the blame on the victim. The blame here lies in the hands of the abuser, the one making the choice to harm another individual. We need to stop placing blame on the victim and hold the perpetrator accountable.

Don´t Women Ask For It?

No!
No woman, child, or man for any reason ever deserves to be abused! Battered women are victims of violence. They do not provoke or deserve such treatment. Many abusers blame their victims for their behavior. There are many things that may make someone angry in a relationship, but how one deals with that anger is a choice some men choose violence. Only the violent party is responsible for the abuse.

Isn´t Domestic Violence Mostly A Low Income Or Minority Problem?

Domestic violence knows no age, education, race, religion, or socio-economic status. It occurs among all sectors of society. However, low-income battered women are more likely to seek assistance from public agencies, such as shelters and hospital emergency rooms, because they have fewer private resources than middle and upper income women. Therefore they are more likely to be counted in reporting statistics.

What Effects Does Domestic Violence Have On The Children?

Domestic Violence has a significant impact on the children; they are often the forgotten victims. Most parents want to believe that their children do not know much of what has happened, often stating the kids were asleep, or we were in our bedroom fighting. Most children do not sleep through domestic violence and can hear into another room.

How Are Children Affected By Domestic Violence?

  • They may exhibit general aggressiveness or violence to siblings or the victim parent in ways that mimic the abusive parent.
  • They often suffer from low self-esteem.
  • They often suffer poor health.
  • They often experience academic problems
  • They, along with their mothers, comprise nearly 40% of the homeless population in the U.S.
  • They are sometimes injured during violent incidents in the home or the family vehicle.
  • They experience night terrors (waking up screaming in the night).
  • They may wet the bed.
  • They kill themselves more often than children who do not live with abuse.
  • They are likely to repeat learned behaviors.
  • They blame themselves for the violence or the inability to stop it and protect the victim parent.
  • They are more likely to be victim of child physical and sexual abuse, most often by the abuser parent and less often by the victim parent.
